The Caregiving Trap: Caregiving “Depends” on Family Relationships

Caregiving is a role that sneaks up on us. One day we’re helping out for a few hours a week and the next day we are providing care 7 days a week for 24 hours a day. Family members or friends looking in from the outside rarely understand the daily life and emotional challenges of the role of caregiver. Outside observers may be judgmental and place guilt on caregivers who are doing his or her best.

Caregiver stress is described as the daily emotional and physical rollercoaster experienced by caregivers. Caregiver stress is prevalent among individuals for whom caregiving represents a part-time or a full-time job. Many caregivers hesitate to report that they feel stressed about the role of caregiver and are uncomfortable discussing feelings of caregiving overwhelm.

Care recipients face their own challenges especially if there is no family available or family is not trustworthy. Needing care can be a scary thought if a future or present care recipient has not prepared from a financial or legal perspective. Who will care for you if you are single, divorced, or widowed?

Caregiving and care receiving depend on a number of factors. It’s difficult to predict the future. The more knowledge you have the better able you will be to advocate for yourself or a loved one.
