Aging parents fail to prepare for needing care in the home—or any type of care. Avoiding caregiving conversations is a common mistake that has devastating consequences for the entire family. “We’ll talk about it later,” later never comes. An accident happens, care in the home is needed. Aging parents expect adult children to provide care. This unrealistic caregiving expectation creates family crises. Adult children revert to childhood behaviors. Adult parents exhibit childish behaviors. Caregiving conversations must occur, boundaries set, and plans made for best- and worst-case scenarios.
