The National Center for Elder Abuse estimates that 55% of all elder abuse cases are due to neglect resulting from a family member who chooses to keep the situation a secret due to embarrassment. Let’s be realistic, who wants to go home for a visit and find out that mom has significant short term memory loss and dad is just barely making ends meet? This is a scary thought, however most children fear upsetting their parents if they make recommendations for home care or other services. But who else will help if the children don’t? Responsibility can be a difficult burden.
