Terry will live in a nursing home the rest of her life due to dementia and mental health issues. Her behaviors at times are erratic and she sometimes throws things. A long time friend of hers had been storing some personal items, books, sheet music etc. for Terry and decided to purchase a bookcase for Terry’s room to be used to hold the items. This resulted in a significant positive change for Terry who now feels that even though she is not living in her home she has her “things” around her. It’s amazing what having just a little bit of ourselves can do to change an outlook or a positive attitude. I find this the same when individuals are moving into retirement communities. The move is made so much easier if the apartment can be furnished with personal items and mementos.
