Caregiving Expert or Counselor | Why You Need One

by |

Caregiving experts with verifiable experience can offer family caregivers relief from stress and anxiety. Caregiving programs can enhance confidence and improve the ability to manage the daily challenges and care needs of aging parents, spouses, and loved ones.

Eldercare consultations can provide support for caregivers who are constantly responding to one crisis after another by focusing on problem-solving and planning. Many committed caregivers experience burnout and exhaustion.

The daily lives of caregivers and care receivers are unpredictable and anxiety-filled. Feelings of invisibility, isolation, and unpreparedness are common. The sense that caregivers and care receivers continually battle a healthcare system that acts more like a barrier than a support is real.

For these and other reasons, scheduling a meeting with a caregiver expert or a caregiver counselor can offer significant benefits in one hour of time.

Manage Unpredictability

Caregiving support exists in many forms. Some programs are informational in nature. Access to specific programming varies from information and referral services to in-person and family caregiver counseling, as well as support groups, and then progresses to the convenience of online support groups and direct expert contact.

Online support is beneficial for those who are time-constrained, limited by travel, prefer access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or who live in remote areas with few or limited services. Online support is available through online educational programs, online support groups, video education, and 1:1 consultations.

Gain Support for Different Care Journeys

Different support needs exist for caregivers who are just beginning their journey versus those who have been caregivers for many years. Needs for support increase as the severity of health concerns and medical diagnoses advance.

Caregiver support for individuals with physical disabilities differs from support for individuals with cognitive diagnoses like brain injuries, dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease. Adult children caregivers have different needs from spousal caregivers. Care receivers have varying support needs, which are differentiated based on their living situation, diagnoses, or physical needs.

A variety of programs exists to meet the specific needs of caregivers and receivers, as well as their desire for the type of access and presentation of information and materials. Each need has variables that progress from the early stages of caregiving and care receiving to the end of life. Below is information about a variety of options to help you decide the type of assistance that best fits your needs and situation.

Information and Referral Programs

Information and referral programs are the most common and the most available. Caregivers and care receivers dial a number or visit a government or non-profit office to receive brochures, articles, and lists of contact information. Information and referral programs are usually free of charge. This experience is similar to being given an encyclopedia of information for further investigation.

The caregiver and care receiver then contact resources to ask for information about available services and resources. Information and referral programs are suitable for individuals who have the time to research information and services, as well as for those who do not have immediate or time-sensitive needs.

Community Workshops, Educational Forums, and Lectures

Community workshops, educational forums, and lectures provided as a government service, as well as by public, private, and nonprofit organizations, offer topical information on a variety of subjects. These programs are usually free of charge or may have a nominal fee to cover the cost of materials provided.

This type of programming is provided by local health, financial, or legal organizations or through churches and other helping organizations. I have attended and presented at workshops and forums organized by the Alzheimer’s Association, the Colorado Bar Association, fiduciary and healthcare groups, care communities, and numerous related organizations, all of which aim to provide community service worldwide.

Individual and Family Counseling vs. Caregiver Counseling

Traditional counseling and therapy programs focusing on psychological and emotional concerns are provided at no charge or may be charged and reimbursed by health insurance. These programs are provided by the government, public organizations, or private providers. Counseling services may be provided by licensed therapists, social workers, care managers, or healthcare advocates.

Caregiver counseling differs significantly from traditional counseling. It is problem and focused-based and while it takes into account emotions, caregiver counseling is not talk therapy to resolve emotional concerns.

During my years as a care manager and professional fiduciary, and today due to advances in technology, I meet virtually and by telephone with individuals to assess their situations and provide insights, recommendations, and potential strategies. When searching for caregiver counselors or caregiving experts, if the counselor’s  or expert’s website is not explicit about their experience, inquire about:

  • Their specialty areas so that you can confirm their expertise in the area of your needs.
  • Ask about their educational background and years of experience to gain confidence that your expected goal will be met.
  • Look at their employment background so that you can determine whether their positions and experience are a match for the experience you are seeking.

Caregiving Expert and Counselors Offer Real Support & Real Answers

The roles of caregiver and care receiver are filled with emotional ups and downs. The roles also entail significant responsibility to act as a financial and medical advocate. These roles require interacting with healthcare and related providers who, at times, seem like barriers to receiving better-than-average care.

Caregivers and care receivers serve as the primary source of information for the healthcare system, providing current and past health histories, surgeries, allergies, medications, and other relevant details. The time and effort involved in managing and coordinating care needs, depending on the situation, can approach the time and perceived burden of a part-time or full-time job. The skill of advocacy is essential to receive better-than-average care.

Specific programming is beneficial for achieving the goal of receiving care that is better than average. Advocacy is rarely a natural skill, but it is a skill that can be learned. Expert programming can be tailored to healthcare advocacy, caregiving, and care recipient issues, addressing specific needs.

Being Named for Legal Caregiving Responsibilities

Family members can also lack an understanding of the fiduciary role of medical and financial power of attorney. Often, a name is included in a document with little to no discussion about the responsibilities associated with these roles. When an emergency happens, the person named is advised that they have been appointed to this significant decision-making role.

These issues include managing the emotional ups and downs of care relationships, identifying reasons for refusal of care, recognizing memory loss, making decisions about taking away car keys, and other challenging situations that must be managed on a daily basis. Many variables exist in care situations, and many are unexpected and unplanned.

Caregiving experts and caregiving counselors with years of direct experience provide genuine support and practical solutions to complex care situations. As caregivers and care receivers know, family situations often evolve to require more complex problem-solving and decision-making.

Ancillary services, such as estate planning, financial planning, or tax planning, may be necessary. Caregiving expert programming provides expertise in various areas that are beneficial to both caregivers and care receivers. This type of expertise aims to educate and train caregivers and care recipients to be more effective advocates in their roles.

Caregiving expert programming and caregiving expertise transfer to the idea: give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. Learning the skill of advocacy supports achieving desired results for caregivers and care receivers. Expert programming is ideal for caregivers and care recipients who want to increase their confidence and ability to manage daily challenges and care needs.

Where to start?

  • Starting by reviewing available information about caregiving experts.
  • Review the expert’s website, read articles, watch videos, and sign up for a free newsletter.
  • Watch an online webinar, video, or a Livestream event to gain confidence and a sense of comfort that the expert has the experience you seek.
  • Check the caregiving expert’s or caregiving counselor’s website to see if it is owned by the expert or counselor. The website may be owned by a large agency offering caregiving information, but funded by advertisers and back-end referral systems.

Then, jump in, and immerse yourself. Learn big, gain confidence, and expand your skills. Lowering stress and anxiety, achieving a life balance, reducing the frequency of crisis situations, and improving your physical and emotional health are just a few of the benefits of taking charge of your caregiving and care-receiving roles.

These results, and many more, are possible for both caregivers and care receivers. I am living proof. Since 1999, I’ve survived and successfully managed the situations that caregivers and care receivers experience each day, from waking up in the morning to falling into bed exhausted each night.

Godspeed on your caregiving and care-receiving journey. Let me know how I can be of support.
