If your parent or family member is in a nursing home, short or long term, the case manager or social worker should invite you to a meeting, sometimes called a care conference or a family meeting. Make it a priority to attend. This meeting will give you the opportunity to receive an update on the health status and progress of your family member. It’s also a good opportunity to ask questions, especially about length of stay and other issues relating to the release of your family member back home. If you don’t know what questions to ask, hire an advocate to go in your place. As with anything it’s all about knowing the right questions to ask.
