Health insurance and associated costs are becoming a more common topic in the news and with companies and employees today. Costs keep escalating and are passed on to employees because employers cannot continue to fund at past levels. Voluntary benefits are becoming more popular. These include insurance for accidents, emergency room visits, short and long term disability and long term care insurance. The idea is that most individuals have a difficult time meeting the costs of co-insurance and deductibles and should they have an accident and not be able to work, could not pay their rent and bills. Whether voluntary insurance is offered through an employer or not, these benefits are available individually and once purchased are “portable” which means that if purchased through an employer you take the benefits with you as long as you continue to pay the premiums.
