Many children ask me about medical care for their parents. I always ask if the children attend medical appointments with their parents. Most reply no. If your parents have chronic health conditions and seem to be having continual issues, it’s a good idea for you not only to attend the appointment with them but also request that your parent add your name to the HIPPA document so that you can speak to the medical office about the care of your parent or parents. Many older adults forget the information provided by their physicians and are seen as non-compliant when they really just can’t remember what they’re directed to do. By attending appointments with your parents you may help them receive better medical care and improve their long term quality of life.
