In my opinion, screening for memory loss should be standard for all adults at the time Medicare is acquired. Working with many families, I am often able to identify the need for such testing. Family members lack the experience or knowledge to notice the little signs. Admittedly, confusion can also be attributed to medications and other factors. However, in this case knowledge is power. If memory loss is identified by testing, the family and individual can make long term plans for health care. Additional considerations are assistance at home and longer term needs for increased home or facility care. Considerations can be given to available finances, the possibility of eventual facility care, and tasks involved with selling a home and moving. At least with a plan, the future will not be as worrisome and uncertain.
